Urban Harvest

Reducing Food Waste, Nourishing Our Community

How Does This Program Work?

Our team actively canvasses the Black Creek community, engaging with homeowners to introduce them to the Urban Harvest Black Creek program. We start conversations to gauge interest and learn about the types of fruits and vegetables being grown.

Once a household signs up, we stay in touch and return when their harvest is ready. Using our cargo bikes, we collect surplus produce and deliver it directly to local food banks, ensuring fresh, homegrown food reaches those who need it most.

Max. Capacity

Up to 30 participants per workshop.

Urban Harvest Black Creek is a community-driven initiative dedicated to rescuing surplus produce from backyards and community gardens and redistributing it to those in need. As one of five Community Reduce and Reuse Programs under the City of Toronto’s Long-Term Waste Management Strategy, this project helps combat food waste while increasing access to fresh, local produce.

In partnership with Black Creek Community Farm and supported by FoodShare Toronto, Urban Harvest Black Creek:

  • Trains and organizes local youth and adults to spread awareness about the program.

  • Encourages residents and community gardeners to share their surplus fruits and vegetables.

  • Distributes fresh produce to local food banks, children and youth programs, seniors, and other community initiatives.

  • Hosts workshops on canning and preserving to help extend the life of harvested food.

Together, we can turn food waste into community nourishment—one harvest at a time!
